Fore-Play

As we’ve all just learned from the FedEx Cup, the best way to suck the drama out of a golf tournament is to turn it into a playoff system that requires a Caltech degree and a TI-82 calculator to understand. So now let’s check out the Puma Open.

After a trial run in six U.S. cities in 2008, the Puma Open has expanded into an 11-city traveling circus. Here’s how it works: Get your foursome together, pay the $300 group entry fee at thepumaopen.com, and then show up at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa this Friday at 2:30 p.m. Tee time is 4, but don’t expect the usual nine holes. Puma has set up a gauntlet of challenges including a hole where you can use only your seven-iron and one where the goal is to complete it as quickly as possible. (The grounds crew is going to love that one.) At 7, it’s time for dinner and Vegas-style gaming. What else do you want from an event, a $10 million prize?
