Miami mayoral candidate Tomas Regalado once raised cash for a terrorist

Tenacity. Vision. Honesty.

Tomas Regalado seems pretty upfront about his core values. Those three words are printed in bold atop hundreds of blue-and-red billboards and bus ads proclaiming his run for mayor of Miami.

So why won't he admit he once helped raise thousands of dollars for a convicted terrorist?

The record seems pretty clear-cut. It's right there in a 1983 Miami Herald headline: "$21,000 Raised for Alleged Terrorist." In the third paragraph, Regalado proudly proclaims his radio station — WRHC (1550 AM), where he worked as news director — pulled in thousands with an on-air pledge drive.

The cash went to a fund to pay for the legal defense of a guy named Eduardo Arocena. Ring a bell? Arocena is only the most notorious Cuban terrorist ever prosecuted in the United States.

The Miami dockworker was convicted in 1984 of igniting 32 bombs from Little Havana to Times Square. Once, in 1975, he set off a little beauty at Lincoln Center because a Cuban ensemble was scheduled to play there. In 1979, Arocena's goons machine-gunned a New Jersey political activist to death in front of his 13-year-old son. The terrorist is serving consecutive life sentences for his crimes.

And Regalado apparently thought the guy was pretty swell, at least back in 1983. Not that he'll admit it today.

"Commissioner Regalado has never planned or held a fundraiser for Mr. Arocena," says Eric Duran, a spokesman for Miami's longest-serving commissioner, who was first elected in 1996.

Huh? Just in case the Herald went all Jayson Blair with its 1983 dispatch, New Times talked to Dionisio de la Torre, who leads a loose coalition of more than 45 Cuban groups that collected petitions last year asking then-President George W. Bush to pardon Arocena.

"Regalado has shown he's a supporter of Arocena," de la Torre says. "Just about two months ago, someone mentioned Arocena on his radio show and [Regalado] said he thinks he's served more than enough time in jail."

In a town where noted anti-Castro terrorists Orlando Bosch and Luis Posada Carriles are still walking free — and hailed as heroes by some — it's not as if supporting Arocena would cost Regalado too many votes.

So why not fess up, commish?

Dear Tom: In your note about Tomas Regalado and his support of Eduardo Arocena, you mention his program in 1983, I did not know about that. and as I said some time ago a listener call and ask about Arocena and regalado said his opinon about the time in jail(25 years) and 25 years is a long time, specialy if your look other cases where american elected official were attacked(congress) and soldier and military and privite property were damage(Puerto Rico)on top of robbery and asalts and those peole are free and walking in their communities. I do not lead any coalition of supporters of Arocena, I was one of many in that effort, what realy happen is that I was the only one that can talk to you in english to inform about this.We just ask, as I said to you, for humanitarians reazons we are asking for Arocenas freedom, 66 years old, sick and 26 yeaars now in jail is more that punishment. sincerely, Dionisio de la Torre, Jr.

the term terrorist was not even in use when Mr.Arocena started his activities against the most cruel dictator of (50)years of oppresion Fidel Castro against that poor people of Cuba...please have a little more respect for patriot that is Arocena.

Who Cares? You guys are just a bunch of communists.

Pretty sure Tomas Regalado's Dad was in Prison in Cuba during this whole thing. That may be a reason. That being said, props to Regalado for living a public life. I would hate to have lived under a microscope for 50 years.

Looks like your desperate for dirt on Regaldo. Good Luck. The guy is one of the few honest politicians in this town. However, I heard that several years ago he had lunch with some people that didn't embrace the idea of recycling paper and glass products. In addition, he has a cousin that was ticketed for overtime parking in a metered zone while on vacation in Canada. This is just a rumor but I'm sure you guys will check it out. I think his cousin paid the parking ticket with American Dollars which may in itself be a violation.

I realize that this is a pretty flimsy story but since I am behind in the polls I will try to get something else on Regalado in order to try to catch up in the polls. If I am unable to come up with some dirt (which is more than likely )I will reach out to my friend Manny who will make something up if necessary. Again I appreciate you guys helping me out. Keep up the good work. Try not to let the facts get in the way of a good story.

You guys are really digging now. I guess Regalado is leading "Big Time" in the polls to have to dig for a stale story like this one.

  • Laendro 09/30/2009 6:03:00 PM

Where does it say he did it? Just sounds like he worked for a place.

Its funny how they make it look like he raised cash for this man when really he was just an employee for the radio station that raised the money. Thomas never raised the money personally and for sure never committed any terrorist acts, if he would have I dough he would be part of the this country's legal system dont you think? It was special members of the radio station. I guess since they cant harm Thomas in a legit manner they decide to write a lie and deceive the people of Miami that are uninformed about events that happened more than 20 years ago. I want to thank my parents and my past schooling for teaching me the real history of this county, so that I can at least try to inform others about the truth that arent as lucky to know it. May god bless our county and the United States of America.
