Good Vibrations

Old-school salsa crooner Oscar D’Leon will parachute into town this Saturday, and he’s ready to turn the Big Mango into his personal rumbarrio.

Beginning at 8 p.m. at the James L. Knight Center, D’Leon will put the fire under your feet with his sizzling salsa repertoire spanning more than 60 albums. The legendary Venezuelan bandleader and composer is perhaps best known for his wicked improvisational skills — that inimitable knack for belting out sugar cane-sweet lyrics on the spot before incredulous crowds. His fiery delivery and high-wattage descarga only gets amped up by the other act on the bill: the Celia Cruz All Stars, a tribute band of young musicians carrying on the legacy of the immortal La Guarachera. Nothing gets the hips swaying and rumps quaking like the Queen of Salsa’s greatest hits, so impress your date with a swing on the wild side.
Sat., Oct. 3, 8 p.m., 2009
