Broadway Ocho

To kick off the 2009-10 season, the Florida International University theater program has chosen a play that hits home. In fact, maybe “hits home” is too quaint a phrase; “aims a heat-seeking missile toward the Miami heart” is more like it.

Melinda Lopez’s drama, Sonia Flew, concerns a Cuban-American mother whose son has decided to enlist in the Army in order to fight in Afghanistan. By getting in touch with her anger over her son’s decision, the mother realizes she has an unfinished beef with her own parents, and it’s not going to be solved over one medianoche. The play is directed by FIU faculty member Jennifer Smith De Castroverde and performed, stage-designed, and lit entirely by FIU students inside the Wertheim Performing Arts Center. Tickets cost $12, or $8 for students, alumni, faculty/staff, and seniors. All showtimes are 7 p.m., except Sundays (2 p.m.).
Sept. 25-26, 7 p.m.; Sun., Sept. 27, 2 p.m.; Oct. 1-3, 7 p.m.; Sun., Oct. 4, 2 p.m., 2009
