No one really knows why Tinseltown has such a small share of Asian entertainers. Of all minorities, Asian-Americans have the slimmest margin of making it through the ringer. And once they make it, what sort of material do they have to work with? Well, if they’re Bobby Lee of MADtv fame, they get to impersonate Connie Chung, Kim Jong-Il, and Yao Ming. They get to be the Asian nerd who asks two-part questions in Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. They get to stand up this Sunday at the Miami Improv and try their hardest not to make jokes about how their grandfather’s name sounds like a pan rattling on the floor.

Make no mistake — the Donger is funny. But what’s sad is that his status as “the Hollywood Asian guy” is now threatened by Ken Jeong (the angry obstetrician from Knocked Up, and Ted from Pineapple Express: “You suck my balls. Two times!”). It’s almost as if the battle between Bobby Lee and Ken Jeong is a metaphorical knife fight in the underbelly of a freighter. Lee will get to take a stab this weekend. Sigh. Tickets cost $21, with a two-item/drink minimum. Showtimes are 8:30 and 10:45 p.m.
Sun., Sept. 20, 8:30 & 10:45 p.m., 2009
