Sweatin’ to the Oldies

If you ain't nothin' but a hound dog, you might want to check out the jukebox musical Smokey Joe's Café at the University of Miami's Ring Theatre this Wednesday at 8 p.m. Rock 'n' roll standards "Hound Dog," "Stand by Me," and "Love Potion No. 9" were the products of songwriting superteam Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who penned many of the golden oldies you hear endlessly on the airways, sampled in rap songs, and aerobicized to by Richard Simmons. The 1995 Broadway hit and Grammy-winning show incorporates 39 of Leiber and Stoller's hits in a lively two-hour production with no dialogue or narrative — just straight-up rocking and rolling. And if you happen to miss Wednesday's sock hop, the celebration will continue until Saturday, September 19. Tickets cost $10 to $18.
Sept. 9-18, 8 p.m., 2009
