Letters from the Issue of August 27, 2009

"Zoophiles evidently don't have any consideration for people. Maybe that's why they have to resort to sex with animals."

Animal Yarn

Sickened: "Animal Instincts" (Thomas Francis, August 20), comparing bestiality to homosexuality, is egregious. Shame on this terrible report. Have you lost your ability to be reasonable? Animal abuse is not the same as two consenting adult humans coming together. This article will only give those inclined to animal abuse an excuse. Having sex with an animal is as wrong as pedophila. What's next, New Times, a piece describing how eating shit is good for you? This is all we needed in Miami, an article to give animal abusers another thing to do and not feel bad about. I am sickened by your comparison.

Inconsiderate: I think it's disgraceful these people call themselves "zoos." That term is reserved for places (AKA zoological gardens) where families (including children) can have a nice day out looking at the lions and tigers and bears.

I work for a zoological garden in London, and I'm worried that people might confuse us for zoophiles. I don't want visitors thinking I'm in the coyote enclosure playing with their genitals when I'm actually repairing the electric fence.

Zoophiles evidently don't have any consideration for people. Maybe that's why they have to resort to sex with animals.

Ungodly: It is very difficult to imagine a human being having sex with animals and thinking it is perfectly normal. Let's go beyond the argument of legality. It is definitely immoral from a biblical standpoint. I am almost always of the opinion that people can do as they wish in their own private lives, but this is truly disgusting.

Godly: Let's see what the Bible says. Leviticus 20:15, 16 reads, "If a man mates with an animal, he shall surely be put to death and you shall kill the animal. If a woman approaches any animal and mates with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood is upon them."

I guess Jehovah isn't a member of PETA, huh?

Hypocritical: Oh, you just have to love the Florida GOP with its recent legislation. It's quite legal in our state for some dude to pork Lassie, but folks of the same sex wanting to get married? No way. That's immoral to them 'Publicans.

This whole issue is really creepy to us folks who love their dogs. You know, that wholesome love. Which, in my estimation, doesn't include blowing My Dog Skip.

Complimentary: Thank you for this insightful and unbiased article. It's by far the most in-depth report I've read on the subject. A family member came out to me as a zoophile some years ago and I've struggled (and mostly failed) to accept it — but your analysis has given me food for thought. I've long been interested in animal intelligence, and I wonder now if some animals — such as the dolphin Malcolm Brenner mentioned — should have separate legal consideration. Especially in an instance where the human, not the animal, is the one in the vulnerable position.

Stand on your own legs: Why in hell would Cody Beck think gay rights activists would or should stand up for him and help his cause? What's the connection? As a lifelong openly gay man and an ex-gay rights activist, I don't understand why this person thinks the gay community should stand up for zoophiles. During the Reagan years, we as a community asked for nothing — we demanded rights, and when there was little or no response, we went to jail for protesting. Maybe Mr. Beck has forgotten "We're here! We're queer! Get used to it!" If he feels so strongly about his desires (which I don't even want to envision), he should go for it. But he should stand up for himself, not look to others to bandwagon his cause.

Thanks for writing this, not a lot of people think about it.

Like I said, the mentality of Glenn M of South Miami is a perfect example of the kind of person who chooses to remain in ignorance and denial out of a subconscious aversion to zoophilia and undoubtedly an innumerable amount of other subjects, much to the misfortune of others. Logical reasoning, right down to the very foundation of what sex is and how we perceive it, but most certainly not limited to sex, will reveal a refined, more socially magnanimous system of morality based upon a very simple system alluding to the Golden Rule, that is, do unto others only what you would have done upon yourself. Zoophilia, as well as many other socially taboo acts, does not defy this rule, as it is capable of being a purely consensual act just as any other form of sex. As the article states, Language is not required to validate the mutuality of sex and most often is not. So it would logically follow that bestiality, though it most often is not, don't get me wrong, is capable of being consensual. The original perception of zoophilia, and all other forms of sodomy (in the original denotative meaning as any form of "alternative" sex) as a sinful act originating from historical and religious beliefs, most notably in the Bible, and the erroneous assumption that all bestiality is abuse is what attributes to its social rejection. However, the common "evidence" for its sinfulness, mainly disease and its often violent execution, have both been debunked as highly situational and entirely preventable. The previous "rebuttal" is based on nothing more than aggression incurred most likely by self-preservation and devotion to illogical, yet common, codes of social conduct and reflects no rehearsed logical thought.

First and foremost, I applaud The Miami New Times for their audacity in reporting on a scarcely-mentioned and commonly taboo subject as zoophilia. I found the article to be very informative, concise, and reasonable on a subject that many "professional" papers might recoil from in fear of alienating their reader base. Anybody with a truly open mind and attentive eye who read the article in its entirety should be able to understand the moral ambiguity of a subject that is most often, for self-comfort rather than logic or reason, outright condemned. Truly, it is an eye-opener of a read and very important in understanding the world and the people and animals around us as opposed to denying their desires on the pretext that it is innately and uncircumstantially wrong to engage in intimate relations with a member of another species. Comprehension of unusual, though not intrinsically morally wrong, lifestyles and desires is very essential to better comprehension of the world, humans, and animals around us, who are rightfully self-governing individuals as much as humans are, and acceptance of people who are wrongfully persecuted for nothing but the mere execution of their harmless desires should come hand-in-hand with the illumination of sexuality as not a cataclysmic and innately wrong act, but as a simple expression of affection between two consenting individuals, be they on two legs, four, or none. Once again, I applaud this progressive paper, Thomas Francis, and anyone who took the time to read and understand this article in spite of what they may have been inclined to believe out of security.
