Please, Save the Last Dance

The art of ballet is one that can be performed against a backdrop of hip-hop or classical, and if you think your bones are too old and too stiff to create a masterpiece, the International Ballet Festival of Miami aims to show you how it's done. Beginning this Tuesday and running through September 13, the In Motion Dance Center will be the hub of instruction, with workshops featuring guest teachers from across the nation who will force your feet into first, second, and third positions. They'll teach you how to work the barre and show you that a great ballerina is made of more than a tight bun and a tutu. Then, once you've learned the basics, catch the pros performing at venues across the city, such as the International Young Medalists Performance on September 5 at the Manuel Artime Theater (900 SW First St., Miami) and the Etoiles Classical Grand Gala Performance on September 12 at the Fillmore (1700 Washington Ave., Miami Beach). Visit internationalballetfestival.com for a full schedule of performances and pricing.
Sept. 1-13, 8 p.m., 2009
