Lively Up Yourself

It’s time to chase those crazy baldheads out of town. Catch the Florida premiere of RiseUp, a film that pays homage to Jamaica’s rich reggae tradition, this Friday at 8 p.m. at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theater. The film, which won Best Music Documentary at Silverdocs, traces the career of the almighty Bob Marley but also covers lesser-known legends Lee "Scratch" Perry, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare. RiseUp celebrates the evolution of reggae by featuring contemporary artists from Jamaica’s rich underground music scene who live the rebel music they love. From the streets of Trenchtown to the dancehalls of Kingston, up-tempo reggae is an endless source of resistance, courage, and positivity. Who among us couldn’t use more positive vibrations? Irie, mon. Stay seated for a Q&A with the film’s director, Luciano Blotta, a University of Miami alum. Tickets cost ten dollars.
Fri., Aug. 14, 8 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 15, 10:45 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 16, 7 p.m., 2009
