West of Mainstream

When New York's Aaron “A-Ron” Bondaroff and local art collector Al Moran decided to open a Miami exhibition space, they didn’t choose the obvious Wynwood locale. Instead they looked to Allapattah and founded Our House West of Wynwood. As crazy as it probably sounded, it worked, and O.H.W.O.W. easily became the place to see some of the best contemporary artwork during Second Saturdays while also attracting plenty of downtown fashionistas looking to show off their latest thrift store finds.

So, in its ongoing quest to become Miami's premier cultural institution, O.H.W.O.W. is now doing a movie night. But don't expect to see the latest blockbuster — art house films and documentaries are on the schedule. This Thursday, the gallery will screen The Legend of Leigh Bowery, the story of a queer icon who influenced both the art and fashion worlds before succumbing to an AIDS-related illness in 1994.

Like all O.H.W.O.W. events, the Thursday-night film screenings are open to everyone and free — even the beer and popcorn are on the house. Doors open at 8 p.m., and the film begins promptly at 9.
Thu., July 30, 8 p.m., 2009
