Summer Better than Others

After stepping out of the limelight for eight years, neo-soul innovator Maxwellfinally has a new album out: BLACKSummers Night (Columbia). It’s the first part of a long-awaited trilogy.

Though the initial single, “Pretty Wings,” is lackluster in comparison to the other tracks on the disc, BLACK definitely represents a comeback worth waiting for. Take for instance, “Help Somebody,” an up-tempo track reminiscent of the heyday of ’70s soul without sounding like a pair of tie-dyed bellbottoms. “Stop the World,” a ballad reflecting on one unforgettable night of love, also deserves heavy rotation. When Maxwell and his band roll into American Airlines Arena this Friday, expect them to focus on the new music without abandoning old hits such as “Everwanting: To Want You to Want” and “This Woman's Work.” In short, it should coalesce into a fine playlist for your own amorous evening.

The show begins at 8 p.m., and Irish songstress Laura Izbor opens.
Fri., July 31, 8 p.m., 2009
