The third annual Red Bull Manny Mania is a contest including 50 local amateur skateboarders who compete for $7,000 in prizes as well as national glory. But here’s the catch: Skaters can ride on only two wheels.

No, the kids won’t be dropping from a helicopter or jumping over the Great Wall of China. Instead, this Saturday at the Ice Palace, they will be tested on precision, balance, and creativity. Red Bull Manny Mania is the first competition focused on the pro-manual trick, which requires riders to balance on two of their four wheels. Skaters will be expected to combine the pro-manual with other tricks in their arsenal. And just to make it more intricate, all tricks will be performed on a custom-built pad designed to increase difficulty — while hanging over a tank of sharks with laser beams attached to their frickin’ heads (just kidding).

The event is free and begins at 5 p.m.
Sat., Aug. 1, 5 p.m., 2009
