Celluloid, with Bubbles

Origin stories have taken over comic books; why not the rest of literature?

Herman Melville's Captain Ahab is one of the more intriguing characters in American bookdom, but by the time we meet him, he's already a whirling dervish of vengeful hatred. The closing film of the eighth annual Perrier French Film Festival, Captaine Achab, takes us further back, letting us watch the cap'n develop into the mono-obsessed man who goes down with the ship.

The Swedish/French collaboration screens at 4 p.m. at Cinema Paradiso. Tickets cost $10.
July 31-Aug. 2, 4 p.m., 2009
