Now’s the Time to Believe the Hype

If anyone embodies the indie-dance phenomenon, it’s Dim Mak founder Steve Aoki. The hipsterati mogul is notorious for crowd surfing, pouring endless bottles of Grey Goose into open mouths, and hyping the crowd to the brink of insanity. His music, on the other hand, isn't exactly blowing anyone away. But that’s not to say Aoki doesn’t have talent. This past WMC, he left his stage antics behind when he spun at White Room. It was difficult to believe this was the same man who normally uses set intros that sound like something straight out of a Jock Jams compilation.

Be forewarned, though: This Wednesday night at LIV, the club’s Dirty Hairy party won’t display the Benihana heir’s softer side. Aoki's April set at the Fontainebleau nightclub was filled with electro-house bangers, climactic breaks, and yes, plenty of stage diving; the entire club was dripping in sweat. And as much as people want to hate, it’s hard not to pump your fist while he drops dance-floor hit after hit.

Local DJs Danny Daze and Contra will provide the opening course, beginning at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $30 via wantickets.com, though you must be 21 or older.
Wed., July 29, 10 p.m., 2009
