Don’t Sit Down; Get Down

Some events don’t require much of you: Show up, have a free cocktail, sit passively, go home. If that’s your idea of a good time, you should probably stay away from the 11th annual IFE-ILE Afro-Cuban Dance Festival, beginning this Friday at the Arts & Mind Center.

The perfect day of dancing begins at 9 a.m. with an all-levels Afro-modern dance class, followed by workshops in capoeira, arara, congo, and orishas. Each workshop costs $20 to participate, $115 for the full day, or $280 for a full pass that includes Saturday and Sunday. If you want to simply watch a class (good luck not trying to join in), you can buy a $75 day ticket.

Friday ends with an 8 p.m. opening cocktail party in the main gallery at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus (300 NE Second Ave., Miami), followed by a free art exhibition/performance by Onye Ozuzu and Mario Dixon. But that’s just the beginning. Saturday and Sunday will also be packed with workshops and performances by modern masters in their respective styles. Call 305-476-0832 or visit ife-ile.org for the entire schedule.
Fri., July 24, 9 a.m.; Sat., July 25, 9 a.m.; Sun., July 26, 9 a.m., 2009
