Tortuga, 1761: A pirate with a small, spherical hat and long, curly dreadlocks walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Argh, Cap’n. How goes it?” The pirate says, “Never better.” The bartender asks why, and the pirate says, “Some gonifjust stole my buried treasure.” Bartender: “What a scurvy dog! But how comes yer so joyful?” Pirate: “He’s been spending less of it than my wife.” Bartender: “Yo-ho-ho! Shiver me timbers, Shmuel! Yer a hearty buccaneer if I’s ever met one!”

As crazy it seems, there actually were Jewish pirates, and some of them were adventuresome menschenwho got revenge post-Inquisition by raiding Spanish ships. Learn the whole swash-bucklin’ tale from author and maven Ed Kritzler as he reads from his heavily researched tome, Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, at Books & Books this Tuesday at 8 p.m. The reading is free; Yiddish-to-Pirate dictionaries are not.
