Blood Badge

Who is the Miami Beach cop who killed twice in one week?

Cops on Miami Beach, like those in Miami, can be rough at times. Clubgoers, homeless guys, and even the famous bicycle-riding resident rooster, Mr. Clucky, have felt their wrath.

But until recently, there was one thing Beach officers didn't do: kill people. Or at least they hadn't done so since 2003. Then last month, an officer named Adam Tavss was involved in two fatal shootings within a week. First he gunned down an unarmed 29-year-old Palestinian-American tourist named Husien Shehada outside SoBe's Twist nightclub in the wee hours of June 14. Washington, D.C.'s American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee deemed the incident "troubling" and called a candlelight vigil.

Miami Beach higherups weren't as troubled, though. Per department policy, they sent Tavss back to his beat four days later. He wasn't gun shy. That night, he and another officer shot dead 29-year-old Lawrence McCoy, who had allegedly carjacked a taxi and driven it the wrong way on the MacArthur Causeway.

The Shehada family called it "unconscionable" that "[Husien's] body is almost still warm and [Tavss] is sporting a badge and a gun and discharging his firearm on the streets of South Beach yet again."

While the police union supports Tavss and faults Chief Carlos Noriega for not standing behind the cop, the scramble to find out more about this real-life Dirty Harry has been launched.

What we know: Tavss is 34 years old and has served on the force for three years. He attended Miami Killian Senior High, and in 1999, a South Miami woman filed a restraining order against him, alleging "repeat violence." There's no record the former teacher had ever fired his gun before — although in 2007, another officer accused him of snorting cocaine at a Christmas party. He passed a drug test the next day and was not reprimanded.

Tavss lives in a two-bedroom $173,000 condo in South Miami and has locked down his MySpace page. His status on the page is listed as "insubordinate."

Just cause he's not there now doesn't mean that they won't charge him with a crime down the road. I'm sure there is someone working on that.

tell that to the victims families. if this was a just world, he'd be sharing his trail mix with other felons in the state penitentiary

I met this cop through other cops that I know, and agree that he's a well educated and well spoken man. I have little tolerance for the way Miami Beach has gone down in the past years, and would actually encourage a stronger presence from more aggressive law enforcement, than what's there now. They need to get a handle on the situation- not by killing anyone who's innocent, but by allowing less of the free for all thats on the streets, especially out of town clubbers looking for a fight. I can walk down Washington and get bumped and challenged 2 or 3 times per block, if I walk alone. If my girlfriend is with me, all hell breaks loose, as they basically treat her like meat. The Beach needs a massive clean up.

For everyone that has read this article and wondered who is Adam Tavss, I can tell you in my experience he is a great guy. He is the kind of person that rescues small animals that have been abandoned by their owners. He is the kind of person that not only recognizes small animals like squirrels in the park, but shares his trail mix with them. He is the kind of police officer that believes in giving people a chance and not always just "locking them up." He would rather educate someone on the law, then mess up their lives by taking them to jail. But he also realizes that some times people need to be arrested. He would rather buy someone something to eat than take them to jail for a minor ordinance violation. He thinks people with mental illnesses should be helped and not picked on or arrested bcause they are a nuisance. He believes education is very important and something that every child should be entitled to, with competent teahers and school administrators. He talks to people with respect, compassion and consideration, regardless of their sex, nationality, race, political views or sexual preference. He believes in protecting and assisting the weak, the young and the helpless. He is a true friend that is always there to help someone if they need it. He is the kind of person that still finds beauty in the world and tries to see the silver lining behind every dark cloud. He is not a monster and he is not evil, he is a man that was doing his job to protect the citizens and vsitors of Miami Beach. He is not gun happy, or over zealous and has never been accused of mistreating or being rude to anyone he has dealt with as a police officer. He has never used excessive force, and would rather talk to someone than go hands on. Please rmember that when you read all these one sided news articles. I may not know him as well as some, but I know him well, and I am honored to call him a friend.
