The ubiquitous apple is the star of a healthful quote begging us to eat it once a day, but the mango needs no cute little nursery rhyme to make us suck on its sweet, sweet flesh. Whether we enjoy it for color, fragrance, flavor, food, or juice, everyone wants a piece of this tropical temptation, and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has devoted an entire day to its glory. This Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the 17th annual International Mango Festival will be the place to buy hand-selected mango trees and fruit, attend lectures that will make you the most knowledgeable consumer of the oval-shaped fruit, food demos, and even a chance for the kiddies to make puppets out of the mango’s beauteous green leaves.

If you thought you were jazzy by sprinkling the fruit with cayenne pepper, try it Indian style with it squeezed onto a piece of bread, or hit the International Fruit Market and see how other cultures exploit this multifaceted gem. Admission is free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under, $10 for children 6 to 17, $15 for seniors, and $20 for adults.
