Bend 'Em Like Benjamin Franklin

Upon signing the Declaration of Independence, John Adams proclaimed the nation would celebrate the occasion every year with fireworks and soccer. OK, maybe not soccer. But he should have said soccer, because July 4 is also when America renews its long-standing rivalry with its biggest adversary. We’re speaking about, of course, Puerto Rico. That’s right. Independence Day is all about handing beatdowns to our own territories.

And this year will be no different, as the Miami FC Blues host the Puerto Rico Islandersfor their annual July 4 match. It’ll be a day when we finally settle this “self-governing” business plus watch some action-packed fútbol followed by an awesome fireworks show. Well, that first part isn’t true, but there will definitely be action and fireworks. The bottom line is there will be fun for all, so come cheer for your team and then take in the post-game celebration. If John Adams were alive to see this, he would be proud — and confused. But mostly proud.
