The Name Means “Brute Force”

In 1993, De La Guardatook New York City by storm, breaking the traditional fourth wall by literally suspending the theatrical performance above the heads of the audience. The popular show ran for 13 years, and now the Argentine-born creative geniuses are back with something new. Called Fuerza Bruta, the new show also asks the audience to stand and wear comfortable clothes, but they’ve also gotten a little more ambitious. The new show is presented in a 360-degree format that has cast members running, jumping, and even getting shot in the middle of the crowd, in addition to swimming inside a Mylar pool that descends from the ceiling to within inches of spectators’ heads. The whole thing is also set to thumping techno music, so if you’re the kind of person who likes to fall asleep in your seat at the opera, this is the last show you’ll want to go to. But for those of us raised on Red Bull and 130 bpm, this is the theatrical performance we’ve been waiting for. Enter the Arsht Center through the Ziff Opera House loading dock at the corner of 14th Street and NE Second Avenue.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 10 p.m. Starts: June 9. Continues through July 5, 2009
