It’s been a long time since Wassily Kandinsky argued in 1909 that color could be its own justification. Since then, abstract painting has gone through alternating periods of favor and disfavor, with disfavor being the preeminent feeling of the moment. But if so, someone needs to go over to the Bakehouse Art Complex and inform the seven artists participating in this Friday’s show, “Fresh Paint: Abstract Expressionism Today.”

Curated by Bakehouse’s own Laura Wagner, the show constitutes a revival of the post-World War II incarnation of paint for paint’s sake and represents a nice cross section of the residency program housed inside one of Wynwood’s most charming former factory spaces. As is usually the case at Bakehouse, the visual treats will be accompanied by an open bar and live music, by guitarist Peter Betan, making the event, which runs from 7 to 10 p.m., a meaty appetizer to Saturday’s art walk. Best of all, there’s no charge.
