In another case of NYC following Miami’s lead on all things cultural, Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester (Blair Waldorf to the regulars) has recorded a cover of local band Awesome New Republic’s hit “Birthday.” And although it’s not as good as the original, it is good, and its very existence confirms our hometown bias that there’s no reason to ever cross the Dade County line. To wit: ANR performs at the Vagabond this Friday to officially close its U.S. tour and pop the cork on its new EP, Rational Geographic Volume 1. The Miami duo is already making serious waves on the pop and indie scene; don’t be that douche who latches on too late. Even better, there’s no cover if you show up before midnight, so set your alarm before taking that disco nap. Opening act Dgenetics is pretty good too, for an L.A. act.
