And a Child Shall Lead Them

Considering that our last president cut funding for the National Arts in Education program each of his eight years in office, it’s a wonder that art in public schools isn’t already buried next to the WMD report. Yet despite Dubya’s cuts, Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe A. Martinez partnered with community leaders in 2004 to start “Creative Visions,” an annual exhibit of juried student art from District 11 schools. This Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., there will be an opening reception for this year’s Creative Visions at FIU’s Frost Art Museum, with live music and dance performances, food, and an awards ceremony. The free exhibit will showcase more than 200 student pieces that range from paintings to video installations.

So leave Art Basel to the Europeans and New Yorkers, and go see Miami-Dade’s own homegrown talent at this year’s “Creative Visions.” These artists are so emerging they’re still underage.
Wed., May 13, 6 p.m., 2009
