Strike a Pose

The impressionists were known for harnessing the sunlit atmosphere of gardens and parks, capturing a world momentarily perceived by the senses in striking bursts of shimmering color. Monet and Renoir often depicted sumptuous outdoor scenes where children, women, and men surrendered to an air of carefree relaxation, frolicking among flowers or languidly reclining under shade trees. That bygone era re-emerges this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. during En Plein Air, a painting event juried by Marcelle Zanetti.

Local artists will gather with their easels, oils, and brushes for an alfresco session, hoping to distill the essence of a balmy spring afternoon and the crowds promenading the estate’s lush grounds, while those eager to become immortalized by a budding Pissarro should grab a parasol or straw hat and pose for their pretty pictures on the bay. The winning artist will be featured at an exhibit hosted at Deering in late May.
Sat., April 18, 10 a.m.; Sun., April 19, 10 a.m., 2009
