“In this day and age of cell phones and video cameras, you get some unique submissions,” says Miami Latin Gay Film Festival director Ellen Wedner, “but we’re looking for quality.” The inaugural run of the fest — which seeks to show gay and lesbian films from all romance-language-speaking countries — will actually happen in late July, but Wedner and company have put together a six-film minifestival to supplement this weekend's Gay Pride revelry. The whole thing begins this Thursday with a Mexican film called Burn the Bridge, a beautifully shot tale of two teenage siblings negotiating the emotionally fraught aftermath of their mother’s death. The director and star will be on hand for a Q&A and then everyone will head over to the Sagamore (1671 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) for a cocktail party. Thirty-five dollars gets you in to both (plus a gift bag), or pay just $11 if you want to see only the film. UM’s Cosford Cinema, Fort Lauderdale’s Cinema Paradiso, and the Miami Beach Cinematheque will also host films through this Sunday, so be sure to check out the full schedule on their website.
