These Jazz Hands Are Fierce

If you missed the United States vs. Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic last week, there’s another opportunity to get your race-war entertainment on. Only this time, it’s...window explosion, side leap in your face, finger snaps... Jets vs. Sharks! Hell’s Kitchen carves out a nook in Sweetwater this Saturday night as the Americans take on the Puerto Ricans in the jazzy-handed butterfly-knife fight of the century: West Side Story.

Tape up your knuckles and prepare to cast your hatred-lovin’ eyes on the Roxy Theatre Group’s interpretation, which features 75 Miami-Dade students ages 11 to 17 participating in an all-out gang war. Open up your ear holes to the live musical accompaniment from the Greater Miami Youth Symphony (jazz fingers!). And if you can’t get enough white tees, jeans, and leather jacketsat this Saturday’s 2 p.m. show, see it again at 8, or take in the one this Sunday at 3 p.m. Your $20 ticket purchase will benefit the theater’s scholarship fund (window explosion, charitable contribution!). And as you watch the race-war grapevine move across the stage, there’s only one thing you need to ask yourself: Do I feel pretty?
Sat., April 4, 8 p.m., 2009
