Fringe Sounds

Check these underground parties for left-field beats.

There are plenty of big-room beats this week, if that's your thing. Still, one of the best parts of WMC is getting to scope out the fringe sounds making the rounds. Whether you are into dark Euro-electro or left-field breakbeats, there's something unusual for you. Below are some of the week's top parties for underrepresented sounds.

Don't let the pool party theme fool you — Bring on the Beats is the ultimate breakbeats gathering in America. Celebrating its fifth anniversary, the BOTB party is one of your best chances to catch the top breakbeat artists mixing under decadent Art Deco pool cabanas. The magnificent DJ Ice — along with the Freestylers, Scratch-D, and Krafty Kuts — takes on the edgier side of dance music in this loud extravaganza.

Scion Presents Thursday at the Gansevoort

Thursday, March 26

Gansevoort Beach Club

2377 Collins Ave., Miami Beach

Party goes from 2 to 8 p.m.

RSVP to brian@beyonddmg.com for admission information

Hercules and Love Affair have been the biggest proponents of ushering back the sounds of classic New York disco. Needless to say, their Scion DJ set should be a great opportunity to hear more of founder Andrew Butler's musical influences. London-based Erol Alkan will be spinning as well. Besides his innovative production work, Alkan is also celebrated for Trash, his legendary London club night, which featured performances by Peaches, the Klaxons, and LCD Soundsystem way back before they broke big. Fan Death and Rory Philips will be there, along with extra guest DJs who will help make this one of the top places to be this year.

Rave culture in America owes a great deal to Frankie Bones. He was one of our first DJs to travel to the UK and bring back the sounds of the emerging acid-house movement. His Thursday-night set will hark back to the acid house days of the early 1990s, but Bones and his crew will also look forward with new and rare left-field techno cuts. For those who long for the old, adventurous days of techno, this is the spot to hit.

Over the past 15 years, drum 'n' bass has gone in and out of style, but its devotees remain a fiercely loyal bunch. For them, the place to be is the tenth annual WMC World of Drum 'n' Bass. No other party exemplifies the energetic madness of the genre, and with Grooverider, Influx UK, and Subject 13 on the bill, this is sure to be one crazy anniversary celebration.

Get a shot of sinister Germanic cool when Gigolo Records' DJ Hell, AKA Helmut Josef Geier, brings his dark and enigmatic soundscapes to Miami. Known for his anti-superstar DJ stance, DJ Hell puts on Gigolo parties that are always a blast, bringing together lovers of all things artsy and esoteric. With the upcoming release of his long-awaited fourth album, Teufelswerk (Devil's Work), Hell will be premiering cool new tracks such as "The Angst." Guest appearances by Gigolo Records label mates make this an essential hell of a disco party.
