Some songs shine brightest in the smooshed-together madness of a megamix, but others deserve their own moment in the spotlight. And still others cry out to be played in the wider scope of a complete discography. That’s what R-E-S-P-E-C-T! is all about. Nightlife impresario Joe Budious dreamed up this Sunday bayside soiree to celebrate the legends that shape the soundtrack of our lives. “This is a lounge experience. There’ll be none of the typical nonsense of the club scene. It’s a tribute day for different artists. We’re going to take someone new on every week, and it’s gonna be four hours of just that artists’ music,” Budious says. We gotta admit the lineup is impressive. Upcoming celebrations will pay homage to Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Prince, Motown, Stax Records, and the Fania All Stars, just for starters. In the month of February alone, they’ll devote evenings to the likes of Bob Marley and Johnny Cash, and this Sunday, perennially popular synth-pop band Depeche Mode will get its moment to shine. Break it down to “Strangelove,” “Just Can’t Get Enough,” and “Personal Jesus” from 4 p.m. to midnight.
