Behold, La Baker

WEAM celebrates the original banana-skirt dancer

Think back to the days when actresses didn’t need words — they had faces. And Josephine Baker had a face to remember, a body to die for, and enough talent to ensure her name belonged in lights that would never grow dim. They called her “Bronze Venus,” “Black Pearl,” and “Creole Goddess.” To others, she was simply La Baker. And this year, to commemorate Black History Month, the World Erotic Art Museum (WEAM) is celebrating her rich legacy with an exhibit of rare paintings, posters, photos, statues, and press clippings. The show will run through March 1, during which Baker recordings and biographical tapes will regale visitors throughout the day. In addition to the Baker retrospective, WEAM owner and curator Naomi Wilzig will also offer a display of African art and sensual sculptures and paintings that capture “a variety of interracial subjects.” See the exhibit from 11 a.m. to midnight.
