Nibbles and Neon

The Miami Modern district shows you its wares

If the Magic City’s image is all about tits and ass, then the MiMo neighborhood scored big time when a refurbished vintage 1970s Coppertone billboard was recently posted on the side of an office building on 73rd Street. The familiar image features a doggy tugging at the bikini bottom of an adorable, topless, 32-foot, blond, suntanned preschooler. The MiMo district, which stretches from 67th to 77th streets on Biscayne Boulevard, was built in the heady postwar era when autos were king and Americans were flush with optimism. The architects came to the table thinking about rocket ships and created landmark buildings featuring sleek and elegant styling and daring angles and lines. Ramble the district, shop the boutiques, and sample the area’s culinary offerings from 22 neighborhood restaurants at the Taste of MiMo from noon to 5 p.m. this Saturday. A 10:30 a.m. walking tour leaves from the Vagabond Hotel. Get more info from the MiMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District — call 305-609-4288 or visit mimoboulevard.org.
