In the first post-Basel Wynwood arts crawl, a trove of riches remain on display in local galleries sans the migraines of maddening traffic and jostling crowds. This Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery (3550 North Miami Ave., Miami), Hung Liu’s “Cycles” features a suite of paintings of savage beauty depicting Chinese women teetering between extremes of subservience and liberation. Inspired by documentary photographs from pre-revolutionary China, Liu’s stunning canvases reflect figures of young prostitutes, matriarchs, brides, athletes, and migrant workers, evoking a sense of the women’s struggles in a male-dominated society.

In the project room, Maria Gonzalez’s “In Your Hands…” explores the use of language and text in art and visual media. The artist attempts to give physical form to thought, observation, intuition, and emotion. Individual works in the installation combine to initiate a personal investigation of significant associations between object and language. Call 305-573-2700 or visit www.bernicesteinbaumgallery.com. Downwind at the Dorsch Gallery (151 NW 24th Street, Miami), “Shapeshifter” is a jarring group show in which nearly a dozen artists exercise their legerdemain to tweak the senses. The exhibit includes paintings, video, sculpture, and mixed media works that convey the notion that art can be mercurial and ever-changing. Call 305-576-1278 or visit www.dorschgallery.com.
