Sandwiched between the politically conscious Rastafari-influenced reggae music of the late Sixties and early Seventies, and the nursery-rhyme braggadocio of early-Eighties dancehall, was the genre known as rockers, or lovers’ rock. Heavy foundation riddims layered with earnest sentiments and pleas for reciprocal romance were the order of the day, and artists such as Johnny Osbourne, Sugar Minott, the legendary Gregory Isaacs, and the late, great Dennis Brown elevated the genre with their timeless tunes. The new reggae night at Bella Rose (423 16th St., Miami Beach) is named for one of those ditties, which means Friday’s new Night Nurse bashment will be the kind of low-key affair where you can happily find a dance partner, rent a tile, and stay for a while. Old-school reggae fans will know what that means.
