Sing Me a Song, Child

When you hear tunes about the first noel and a red-nosed reindeer echoing through the aisles of your local Walgreens, you know the holidays have arrived. And like clockwork, you spring into motion, untangling strings of glistening lights and dusting off oversize crimson stockings to the familiar little ditties. This year, put your Mariah Carey Christmas CD on pause and head to the 2008 Caroling Competition to hear scores of local young’uns reinterpret holiday classics in the name of joy — and more than $25,000 in prize money.

From December 3 through December 7, six groups of students from 30 Miami-Dade middle and senior high schools will gather around the poinsettia tree at Merrick Park to bring you the sounds of holiday music. And whether you pray in a church, synagogue, or mosque, these tunes will be purely nonsectarian, so you can take your entire Rainbow Coalition out to watch these cherubs croon. After all, everyone loves to deck the halls with boughs of holly. The first group sings at 7 p.m.
