Cutting Closer to a Cure

Getting your hair styled has never been so eventful.

“Nice haircut! Where’d you get it?” Your usual answer to that question is the name of a swishy salon. Wouldn’t it be great to have an interesting story behind your cool new haircut? To be able to say, “I got my hair cut in a park, during one of the coolest fundraising events I’ve ever been to,” instead of the standard response? If you’re ready to leave the salon sinks and plastic bibs behind, the organizers of the Breast Cancer Cutathon have a special day planned for you.

“The inspiration for this event came when Linda Marten, a lady who was very influential in my career, passed away two years ago,” hairstylist Nancy Torres explains. Marten was not only a local hairstylist and business owner but also the proprietor of a successful Miami-area Paul Mitchell distributorship. Through her hard work, she connected salons throughout the city. This Sunday, in her honor, those assisted by her career advice and affected by her untimely passing will come together. “We’re charging a $20 donation, and we have top hairdressers from Miami volunteering their time and their talent for the cause,” Torres says. Stop by Dante Fascell Park (8600 SW 57th Ave., South Miami) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No reservations — this hairstyling experience is strictly first-come, first-served. Stylists from Hair Now, Olazabel, Green Apple Haircutters, Myra’s, Peter of London, Andy’s Hair Salon, and several other top Coral Gables and South Miami cutteries, will offer their services. There will be raffle prizes galore, including gift certificates from Town Kitchen & Bar and Deli Lane, hair products, and hotel stays. One hundred percent of the day’s proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure fund, and a food drive for the Homestead Soup Kitchen will also take place, so bring canned donations. Call 305-661-3008 and ask for Nancy Torres if you have any questions. And after you get your hair did, show it off at the second annual Pink Gala. The yearly bash will be held at Flavour Nightclub (2895 McFarlane Rd., Coconut Grove). Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door for this classy evening of live music, dance performances, and fundraising fun. Call 305-541-8006, ext. 231, or visit www.elitepinkmiami.com.
