Radiorama

Get to Hamtoberfest before it’s over and out.

When a serious storm comes through, good luck trying to get cell phone reception, and forget about going online. Hell, you wouldn’t even be able to Twitter. Your best bet for effective communication is an amateur radio operator. Yeah, laugh all you want. “What, you mean ham radio? That’s for geeks and truckers.” But if a category five were blowing up your pants, you’d wish you were friends with one of those geeks. So make sure you get out to the Dade Radio Club of Miami’s 46th annual Hamtoberfest (previously known as the Hamboree). The event takes place Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Miami Mahi Shrine (1480 NW North River Dr., Miami).

Ham-sters will highlight the use of their favorite radio during emergency and will offer operator license tests. Tickets cost five bucks in advance, seven at the door.
