Homecoming U

The young Canes take on formidable Wake Forest.

Although this Miami Hurricanes team is very young and very inexperienced, the overall preseason consensus was that the guys would be feisty and competitive. But after giving the powerhouse Gators all they could handle a few weeks ago, the Canes have been largely a disappointment in many ways. Quarterback Robert Marve has shown glimpses of greatness but has been mostly inconsistent, while the speedy defense has been hit or miss. Many blame the play-calling; others say head coach Larry Shannon needs a little more time to mold the young studs into something special.

The one constant, however, has been freshman speedster, receiver Travis Benjamin. The explosive Benjamin can clock a 4.2 in the 40-yard dash and has been nearly unstoppable on offense this season. Some are already comparing him to UM great Santana Moss, while others say he’s the next Ted Ginn Jr. (pre-Dolphins). We here at New Times, in our season-opening preview of the calendar section, were one of the first to call attention to this future star. And we’ll say it again: Travis Benjamin is the real deal and worth seeing even when the Canes are struggling. This Saturday they face Wake Forest in the U’s homecoming game at Dolphin Stadium. Kickoff is at noon. Tickets range from $19 to $360.
