MoCA’s marionette wiz brings masterpieces to life.

Conceptual Gepetto, Pablo Cano can usually be seen trolling his Little Havana nabe searching for discards to lovingly turn into enchanting marionettes. He fashions the whimsical creations from sundry found objects he uses to create amazing puppet theater works that have enthralled local audiences for more than a decade. Saturday at 2 p.m., Cano opens “The Blue Ribbon” at MoCA, where his production will feature live music, a drawing contest, and film screening in a dinner theater-style setting, all intended to engage audiences in a multisensory tale.

“The concept was written by my mother when I was eight years old,” Cano says. “It’s about a little boy who wants to exhibit his drawing in a museum, where he tapes it to a wall. His drawing causes the surrounding paintings and sculptures to come alive.” For the event, Cano has transformed masterpieces from art history into marionettes. To create his Mona Lisa, the artist fabricated a torso from a birdcage, a head from a tin candy box, and articulated joints from rope. “Also, kids will be able to make their own drawings and we will pin them up as part of a group show,” Cano informs. The show will run through November 9. Tickets cost $15, $3 for children under 12. Seating is limited, and advanced reservations and payment are required. Call 305-893-6211, or visit www.mocanomi.org.
