Specialized to Organize

This Liberty City festival brings the noise and funk.

The Miami Workers Center, whose mission is to “build the collective strength of working-class and poor black and Latino communities in Miami,” is throwing a party. The Pure Funk DJs from Hot 97.1 FM will rock their trademark wall of sound for Saturday’s second annual Pride and Unity Festival. As Pure Funk DJ Bo “The Lover” explains, “If nobody is listening to what I got to say, I’ma draw attention to myself.” The afternoon will be all about drawing attention to serious political issues while having fun.

More than 30 service organizations will educate the community about election issues. There will also be a basketball tournament and plenty of live entertainment when Babalu and his Headhunters Junkanoo Band showcase their rhythmic dexterity. And Power U band will bring the soul. It’s goin’ down from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belafonte Tacolcy Park. Call 305-316-0303, or visit www.miamiworkerscenter.org.
Sat., Oct. 4, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., 2008
