The Classic Is Back

The last true Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) football game hasn’t been held in Miami since way back in 1984, when the game was played in the late, great Orange Bowl. But on Friday night, the city hosts its first HBCU football game in 24 years when the Howard University Bison face off against the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcats in the 2008 Miami Football Classic.

Formally known as the Orange Blossom Classic, the Miami Football Classic seeks to bring a cornerstone event for the African-American community of South Florida. It will include a two-day festival featuring a step show, college band performances, parties, and athletics that reveal the myriad opportunities an HBCU education can offer. Among the highlights are a coaches’ luncheon, tailgate parties, and an afterparty hosted by former Dolphins running back Mark Higgs. The game features some exciting players, including Bethune-Cookman All-MEAC second-team defensive back Antwane Cox and Howard U freshman standout receiver Willie Carter. Kickoff is at 6:45 p.m. Tickets range from $36 for adults to $25 for kids. Visit www.miafootballclassic.com for more information and to purchase tickets.
