It’s Chili in Here!

Decades before you could buy chili in an oversize can at the local Publix, women wearing rainbow hues walked the streets of San Antonio passing out the good stuff, bowl by bowl. The hearty meat stew kissed with the flavors of chili peppers, onions, garlic, and cumin made folks in the 1800s happy enough to dance along with the mariachi bands accompanying the chili queens. Although the health department eventually decided the process wasn’t sanitary, no overzealous government agency could destroy the hunger for the caliente vittles. Gone are the days of the roving chili queens, but fortunately for us, Coconut Grove is bringing the spicy back with the Great Chili Cook-Off.

This Saturday from noon to 6, area restaurants and home chefs will take CocoWalk’s Fat Tuesday by storm with their best recipes while hungry, hungry folks walk from table to table ready to taste the goodness. There’ll be live music, beer specials, plus a waiters’ race. And best of all, a portion of the proceeds benefits Kristi House, a charity for sexually abused kids. Visit www.cocowalk.net for a list of participating restaurants.
