Feels Like the Last Time

Out of contention, the Marlins look to play spoiler once again.

We were all hoping the final Super Saturday of the season would be about the Florida Marlins taking sole possession of first in the NL East. Instead, when the Fish face the Philadelphia Phillies at Dolphin Stadium, they will be reprising their role of spoiler. Last season, Florida played a hand in the New York Mets’ historical late-season meltdown. That was fun. This time around, it’s the Phillies’ turn.

But this game is not all about pulling a “Gillooly” on Philadelphia’s playoff hopes. It’s also about witnessing some Marlins history. The Fish are on the cusp of being the first National League team to have three infielders with 30-plus home runs in a season — with first baseman Mike Jacobs, second baseman Dan Uggla, and shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Also, after the game, closing out this year’s Super Saturdays postgame concerts will be a show featuring Lou Gramm of Foreigner. So be a witness to it all. Tell your friends that, yes, the Marlins have three infielders with 30 home runs and that, yes, Lou Gramm is still alive! First pitch: 7:10. Tickets start as low as $12.
Sat., Sept. 20, 7:10 p.m., 2008
