Jazz singer Nicole Henry is a local treasure — a cool, tall drink of water whose crooning calls to mind Sarah Vaughan and Dinah Washington. Her voice is smoldering and sensual, jaunty and joyful, potent and sweet all at the same time. Her brand-new album, The Very Thought of You, features jazz standard covers originally performed by Etta James and Frank Sinatra. This local girl has made very, very good, and whenever Henry is back from Japan, New York, or Paris, she blesses audiences at local watering holes such as the Van Dyke with thrilling live performances. This Friday night from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., she won’t be singing for her supper, but for the youngsters who benefit from the arduous work of the Empowered Youth Resource Center.

The nonprofit gives kids who emerge from Miami-Dade’s juvenile justice system something to hope for and aspire to, by offering mentoring, tutoring, drug rehabilitation, and a taste of art and culture. Christabelle’s Quarter is the spot for a classy silent auction and cocktail reception starring Henry, alongside Drea, Bully Banger, and I Am Hip Hop: My Voice Matters — a group that spreads positivity through music, spoken word, and dance. There’s a suggested minimum donation of $100, and all proceeds will benefit this important cause.
