Daddy, I Wanna Dance

Bellydancing “Rakstars” take over the Carlyle.

The typical image of a belly dancer is a woman with a sly smile and come-hither hips draped in flowy fabric, but there are dudes out there who get down in the traditional Middle Eastern dance. Yeah, a vision of those Macarena men just popped into our heads too. But go to YouTube, search “Tito belly dancer,” and be confused no more. There you’ll find videos of Egyptian superstar Tito, rocking his hips and shakin’ what his daddy gave him — all in a very masculine way, of course.

“Tito is truly the heart and soul of Egypt. His enigmatic smile, endless charisma, and sea of talent will have you begging for more!” gushes Virginia, producer and director of Sunday night’s Rakstar: A Bellydance Gala Show & Hafla. For just $30 bucks, you’ll get to watch Tito, special guest dancers, and members of Virginia’s Wa Nour Al Ayun dance company tell nothing but the truth with their hips at the Byron Carlyle Theater, ’cause those bad boys don’t lie. The show starts at 6 p.m. Get your tickets by calling 866-448-7849 or clicking www.ticketmaster.com.
Sun., Aug. 10, 6 p.m., 2008
