Speak on It, Nancy

Love her or hate her, Nancy Pelosi’s in the house.

There’s something about a woman who tells it like it is that really rankles the powers-that-be, especially in the political world. A man can be as biased and ill-informed as he’d like, but let a female politician say the quote-unquote wrong thing, and she gets branded with that five-letter word that rhymes with itch. Despite their brains, experience, and the meaning of their messages, Hillary becomes “Shrillary,” Condi Rice gets branded as Bush’s lapdog, and Michelle Obama is likened to reality show nightmare Omarosa. Now, Nancy Pelosi is being labeled a failure in an “I’m rubber you’re glue” attempt by pundits on the right. This because the current speaker of the house said what many others in this country have thought — that Prez Dubya has been “a total failure” on just about every issue he’s touched. Whether or not you agree with Pelosi’s opinion of Bush as a modern anti-Midas, you gotta admit that she got where she is for a reason. Nancy Pelosi is accomplished, eloquent, intelligent, and unafraid to share her point of view. And today you can shake her hand and ask her whatever question you’ve got. That’s right, the highest ranking elected woman in American history will be at Temple Judea, at 7:30 p.m.

Pelosi’s in town to promote her book, Know Your Power: A Message to America’s Daughters. She will talk, answer questions, and sign books in this special event, presented by Books & Books in collaboration with the Florida Center for the Literary Arts. Tickets are required, but they’re free — you can get them at all Books & Books locations, while supplies last. There is a limit of 4 per person.
Wed., Aug. 6, 7:30 p.m., 2008
