Cure for the Common Man Purse

Tomas Diaz brings the Latin beat to Guayabera Nights at Jazid.

Heading out at night requires too much stuff, even for guys. You need the clunky smart phone to pretend to text someone when you're bored, the digital camera to capture the best moments, the hand sanitizer for the germs, the keys, the comb, the drink tickets, the breath mints, the cigarettes, the lighter, and the wallet. Fumbling through your pants pockets can be embarrassing. Luckily, there's an easy solution. No, not a man purse — we’re talking about the guayabera. The traditional Latin American shirt sports four pockets to easily organize all of your junk.

Every Tuesday in June, Jazid salutes the distinctive shirt and the Cuban culture that popularized it — during Guayabera Nights. Tomas Diaz, the excellent timbales player for the Spam Allstars, provides live salsa music, while the bartenders sling guayabera cocktail specials such as mango mojitos. Admission is free, and doors open at 10 p.m. Call 305-673-9372, or visit www.jazid.net. Guayaberas are not required, but why would you want to show up without one?
Tuesdays. Starts: June 17. Continues through June 24, 2008
