Somewhere, Beyond the Sea

Not one, but two events float o’er local waters this weekend.

Try this out for an equation — peninsula + wealth = proliferation of boats in South Florida. Lotsa boats means lotsa boat-related events. And thus, two of Miami's favorite boat-racing events return to local shores. Spring into Summer Regatta (formerly the Mid-Winter Regatta), an inspiring series of boat races, returns to Shake-A-Leg Miami. Boaters can register until May 30, with fees starting at $65. Proceeds benefit Shake-A-Leg, a nonprofit organization that offers nautical services to those with and without disabilities. Call 305-858-5550, or visit www.shakealegmiami.org.

Meanwhile, those seeking excitement with a touch of the exotic should check out the fifth annual Miami Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival taking place waterside at 777 Brickell Ave., Miami. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., spectators can watch competitors race traditional 40-foot Hong Kong-style boats down 250- to 500-meter waterways. Enjoy martial arts performances, authentic lion dances, and the Japanese drummers of Fusho Daiko. Call 305-636-0902, or visit www.miamidragon.com.
