Mothership Connection

Past is present, and rum rules.

During Cuba’s golden age, the island’s Carnival season drew multitudes into the streets for a raucous celebration that delivered revelers to the outer limits of joy. Entire neighborhoods and fraternal organizations rehearsed for months. Elaborate parade floats were created for the giddy affair. Families made the rounds in their snazzy convertibles. Snaking through the streets, conga lines would sway to seductive drum rhythms until dawn. Beginning Friday at 11 a.m., CubaNostalgia continues its love affair with the past, celebrating its 10th anniversary with a tribute to the Carnavales of yesteryear. Beam back to the sultry motherland at this exhibit commemorating the island’s independence day. It runs through Sunday at the Fair-Expo Center. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Call 305-856-7595, or visit www.cubanostalgia.org.

At the Globe Café & Bar (377 Alhambra Circle, Coral Gables) the fifth annual Cuba Libre Block Party cranks up the funk at 4 p.m. with a City Beautiful blowout dishing out Cuba’s musical charms. Rey Ruiz, Los Tres de la Habana, and Los Herederos provide the steamy soundtrack at the free open-air concert, while street vendors serve up savory snacks and Bacardi pours traditional Cuban cocktails.
