Funky-Fresh Floral Fest

All the hothouse flowers are at the Fruit and Spice Park.

Each morning you step out of the shower smelling so fresh and so clean-clean, but if it weren’t for that swipe of Speed Stick, your body would probably end the day on a more funky note. You (or we) are not alone, because even the amazingly beautiful orchid goes through a bit of an aroma alteration. The Clowesia rosea smells like Vicks VapoRub in the a.m. and spicy cinnamon in the afternoon, while the Catasetum expansum bouquet resembles turpentine in the morning and ends the day wearing the scent of rye bread. We say it’s still better than the eau de onion fragrance you rock, but whatev. From May 16 to 18, savor all the various flavors of Orchidaceae at the 12th annual Redland International Orchid Festival.

More than 50 world professional growers will be on hand. Some will be selling their goods, and others will just be teasing you with the exclusive hybrids that your vases dream about holding. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., there’ll be lectures and demos, walking tours of Fruit and Spice Park, raffles, and international grub. Admission is five bucks.
Sat., May 17, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 2008
