Celebrate Cinco de MiMo all along Biscayne!
Published on May 01, 2008
¡Ay Chihuahua! Biscayne Boulevard is kicking it up for a tequila sunrise binge and a Frida Kahlo look-alike contest during the Cinco de MiMo Festival, which stretches from NE 66th to 77th streets on the historic strip. Beginning Friday at 6 and running through Sunday, the trendy MiMo hood will be abuzz with guided historic walking and bus tours, a sock hop, a Little Miss MiMo pageant, artist installations, winetastings, free film screenings, and live concerts at many restaurants, shops, and hotels. The kick-off party starts at 7 p.m. at the Upper Eastside Garden, followed by dinner specials at chic eateries up and down the boulevard.
There will be plenty of events for adults and children to enjoy throughout the weekend. Highlights include a Saturday-night Fifties sock hop at Karma Car Wash, hosted by Elaine Lancaster, and a Cuban salsa bash at UVA 69 restaurant. Bring the tykes to the MiMo Hula Hoop Contest, the festivals most twisted event, Saturday at 6 p.m., when the Tyler Galleries (6914 Biscayne Blvd.) will provide hula hoops to competitors. For hip-swaying of a more exotic sort, shimmy over to the Turkish party and belly dancing performance at Galata Tower (7541 Biscayne Blvd.).
