Your Saturday Soundtrack

By Patrice Elizabeth Grell Yursik

Published on April 17, 2008

Look out, weekend, here you come — with a yen for live music and good times. If you’re not sure where to go, and the usual venues leave you less than enthusiastic, you can enjoy two very divergent sonic experiences at places that are off the beaten path when it comes to concerts. If you’re seeking spiritual nourishment with your sweet tunes, we recommend the Lincoln Road Gospelfest. The inspirational choruses will come spilling out of the sanctuary of Miami Beach Community Church today at 6 p.m. Local spiritual luminaries, including the Unity on the Bay choir and Kathy King, will offer up thanks and praise. Admission is free; call 305-538-4511.

If you’d like your Saturday soundtrack to be more down ’n’ dirty, skip the spirituality and head straight for the Swamp Stomp at Jimbo’s (Duck Lake Rd., Virginia Key). There, beside the crusty crew of regular boozers, will be five bands rockin’ out from 5 to 11 p.m. Jahfe, Tavern, ArtOfficial, Juke, and The Jean Marie will serenade the one-eyed cats and well-marinated sailors at this notorious renegade hangout. Tickets cost five bucks at the door, but if you buy a Swamp Stomp T-shirt for $10, they’ll let you boogie on by for free.
